The Lightning  was one of many famous clipper ships to sail the Great Ocean Road coastline last century between Melbourne and overseas ports. In 1854 the Lightning set a record return joutney from Melbourne to Liverpool of 63 days, never equalled by sailing ships. In 1869 the Lightning was destroyed by fire while loading wool in Corio Bay,Geelong.
